Hotel owners surveyed spend more than $2,500 annually on maintenance parts.
Small fixtures break constantly. Toilet handles rust. Soap holders crack. Room signs need replacing. I created this project to explore how 3D printing can help independent hotel and motel owners reduce maintenance costs and replace common parts faster.

Independent hotels replace dozens of small fixtures over time. The individual parts may seem inexpensive, but the costs and inconvenience add up quickly.
Hotel owners surveyed spend more than $2,500 annually on maintenance parts.
Owners reported that most of the replacement parts they use are universal.
The round-trip distance from my family’s motel to the nearest Home Depot.
At my family’s motel, 3D printing has already helped us create and replace useful items like soap holders, mirror clamps, vases, and room signs. When the same item can be printed for a fraction of the retail price, the savings become hard to ignore.
| Part | Retail Price | 3D Printed Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Toilet Handle | $11.79+ retail | $1.21 to print |
| Soap Holder | $17.49+ retail | $1.30 to print |
| Mirror Clamp | $2–$5 retail | $0.16 to print |
| Room Sign | ~$25 average | $1.25 to print |

My family operates a motel, and I have seen firsthand how often small fixtures need to be repaired or replaced. Because I already enjoyed 3D printing, I began experimenting with practical ways it could help our property.
What started with a few practical prints became a labor of love. I wanted to bring together what I learned, what worked at our motel, and the research that could help other independent owners decide whether 3D printing makes sense for them.
This project combines hands-on motel experience, survey data from hotel and motel owners, and outside research on distributed manufacturing, maintenance costs, and digital inventory.
You do not need to design every part yourself. Existing models can cover many simple, universal hotel and motel needs.
The Research page holds the complete project record. The blog turns individual findings into shorter, useful articles.
